How to support someone with PCOS or Endometriosis

PCOS and Endometriosis are detrimental conditions which not only affects those who have these conditions but also those around the affected individuals.

Friends & family can play a crucial role in supporting their loved ones. If someone you know has PCOS, you can make them feel comfortable by simply understanding the basics of the condition. You can also show up by:

  1. Being a compassionate listener - PCOS has a significant impact on both, physical and mental health. Encourage your loved ones to open up about their experience, fears & concerns. This can mean more to them than you realise.

  2. Encourage a healthy lifestyle - A healthy lifestyle can be instrumental in managing PCOS symptoms. Encourage your loved one to adopt a balanced diet that aligns with a diet for PCOS patients. Emphasize the importance of regular exercise and offer to be their workout buddy.

  3. Highlight self-care and stress management - PCOS is stressful in all aspects.  You can support someone who is affected with PCOS by encouraging them to prioritise self-care and stress management. Offer to join them in relaxation exercises, meditation or yoga sessions. Providing a supportive environment can help in reducing stress which may result in an improvement of PCOS symptoms

  4. Advocate together - Advocacy plays a vital role in raising awareness about PCOS. Consider advocating for PCOS awareness alongside your loved one. Participate in fundraising events, awareness campaigns, and community initiatives aimed at increasing knowledge about PCOS and improving support for those affected by it.

Similar to PCOS,Endometriosis is a daunting condition which requires an immense amount of support from people around individuals with this condition. You can support your loved ones by:

  1. Respecting boundaries - everyone experiences endometriosis differently. Some may want to talk about it openly, while others may not. A simple “ How can I support you? can open the door to a conversation while making them feel comfortable.

  2. Supporting appointments - Doctor’s visits can be overwhelming, and having someone there for support can be reassuring. If your loved one is comfortable with it, you could offer to accompany them, take notes, or help them remember important questions. Just knowing they don’t have to face it alone can be comforting.

  3. Open conversations to navigate relationships- Endometriosis can impact romantic relationships, including intimacy. If you’re a partner, patience and open communication can go a long way. Learning together about the condition  and exploring ways to maintain closeness, whether emotional or physical, can help strengthen your relationship.

  4. Offer help in small ways- Practical support can ease some of the daily burdens they might be facing. Offering to help with errands, prepare a meal, or go along with them to an appointment can make a big difference. Even small acts of kindness can help lighten the load.
